Transcript Of The Press Remarks Of Turkish Ambassador H.e. Cagatay Erciyes Following His Meeting With H.e. Prime Minister Tammam Salam

Beyrut Büyükelçiliği 23.07.2016

I have just had a very fruitful meeting with HE Prime Minister Tammam Salam. During the meeting, I briefed the Prime Minister on the recent developments in Turkey.

In this respect, the focus of our meeting was on the 15 July coup attempt in Turkey perpetrated by a group of plotters in the military, to overthrow the democratically-elected Government and the constitutional order in Turkey.

Let me take this opportunity to share with you some information as well.

As you know, Our President, Prime Minister, Government, Members ofTurkish Parliament and above all the Turkish people all togetherdefeated this coup attempt and stood by democracy and rule of law.

As you all watch on TV channels, Turkish nation as a whole displayed a historic solidarity and unity as they took to the streets, stood bravely in front of the tanks and reclaimed their democratic rights.

The coup attempt was foiled in less than 24 hours but unfortunately 246 people were dead and 1536 wounded.

We have solid proof that the coup attempt was staged by Fetullah Gulen Terrorist Organization (FETO).

During my meeting, I briefed HE Prime Minister Salam about the dangers of this terrorist Organization who has managed to setup illegal undercover networks in the Turkish State structure.

Members of this secretive terrorist organization have penetrated not only in the Army and Judiciary,
but also several Ministries and other state organs in Turkey. They were trying to create an illegal parallel state within the state.

As a result of ongoing investigationsafter the
coup attempt, as of today 10.410 people were detained and 4060 were arrested.

During my meeting with HE Prime Minister Salam, I also touched upon the nation-wide State of Emergency in Turkey which was declared yesterday upon the decision of our Parliament in accordance with our Constitution and in full observance of European Convention of Human Rights.

As you know, State of Emergency is a measure permissible under international law taken by many states when there is an imminent threat to its security and order, as it is the case,

for example, with France who has recently extended for another six months the country wide state of emergency.

As the Turkish Government has emphasized, this measure will not affect fundamental rights and freedoms of our citizens. Democratic structure of the state will be protected and the rule of law will continue to be upheld.

I should also like to underline especially for our Lebanese Friends that the State of Emergency in Turkey will no way affect the tourism sector, tour operators and agencies. Our Lebanese friends can travel and enjoy Turkey as much as before.

During the meeting I also thanked HE Prime Minister Salam for denouncing the coup attempt in Turkey and his support to our Government.

I would also like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to those Lebanese who have expressed since last Saturday their support and solidarity with our Government and the Turkish People.
